RhB Landquart, a smart façade
Landquart in the Swiss canton of Grisons is the home of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) transport company. It built its first railway line, from here to Davos, in 1889. In spring 2020, a new infrastructure hub at the railway station was completed, which also provided space for expanding the rolling stock workshops. The building was planned by Maurusfrei Architekten AG. PICHLER projects realised a 2,120-square-metre smart curtain wall made from glass elements, some of which darken automatically.
Around 500 square metres of aluminium windows are installed on the ground floor and first floor, while three large sliding folding doors allow trains to enter the building directly.
The second floor, which houses the offices, has a large and curved mullion-transom façade that measures 1,200 square metres and features structural glazing with dynamically controllable glass panels. A special, electrifiable coating internally darkens the glass panels. This is done either automatically via the building control system or manually; in either case, it is completely silent. The electrochromic glass system ensures perfect glare and heat protection depending on the intensity of the sun, making conventional sun protection measures unnecessary.
