Cable car station
A seagull’s wings
This project created a state-of-the-art means of transport which can move up to 3,000 people per hour from the island of Tronchetto to the Piazzale Roma and back. It is fast, comfortable and environmentally friendly.
And the architecture of this people mover is just as impressive: made from steel and glass, it resembles a seagull in flight. Francesco Cocco from Rovereto, a native of Venice, is the architect behind the idea.
The stations of the new line consist of a steel skeleton clad in glass panels. The main challenge in their planning process involved the dimensional tolerances of the steel, which had to be taken into account especially when constructing the curved components of the station at Tronchetto.
For the station at Piazzale Roma, on the other hand, the building works had to be carried out during ongoing operations and in the face of a constant stream of passengers.
