Shopping center
An innovative shopping and leisure hub
Spanning an impressive 65,000 square metres, the Mall of Switzerland just outside Lucerne is Switzerland’s second largest shopping and leisure centre. The building consists of three units: the mall itself, one leisure unit and one multistorey car park.
PICHLER projects was hired for the planning, production, delivery and assembly of the Mall of Switzerland’s domed trapezoidal steel sheet roof, the glass skylights and the metal façade of the multistorey car park.
The whole steel structure was hot-dip galvanised and welded directly on site; the glazed elements were attached using screw hooks. The skylight above the mall’s main hall consists of a primary steel structure made from multiple trusses and a secondary aluminium structure. The façade of the multistorey car park was covered with expanded-metal cladding. Everything was assembled on site.
The domed roof is a double-curved steel structure featuring trapezoidal sheet cladding and two types of skylights. The engineers planned the domed roof in an earthquake-proof way, mindful of increased geological activity in the Ebikon area.
