V-Bahn – Eigerexpress mountain station and connecting bridge
For the new V-Bahn in the Bernese Oberland, the Jungfraubahn Group chose PICHLER projects for its expertise in steel and façade construction. Following projects at the Zugspitze (Germany), Falginjochbahn (Austria) and Seiser Alm (Italy), PICHLER projects delivered the Eigerexpress mountain station and a connecting bridge at approximately 2,300 metres above sea level.
The extreme high-altitude conditions demanded exceptional precision in planning, logistics and execution. Steel mullion-transom façades were used for transparent areas, with curtain walls incorporating glass-fibre elements for opaque sections. Large-format glazing offers guests sweeping views of the alpine panorama upon entering the station.
Complex logistics and limited on-site storage posed significant challenges: large insulated glazing units and elements up to four metres high were transported via material cableway or train, then carefully installed. Heated glazing in the roof and discreetly integrated heating strips were also incorporated.
Through precise coordination and efficient time management, PICHLER projects delivered the project to the highest standards, with the V-Bahn opening on 5 December 2020, two weeks ahead of schedule.
