Alpine dreams
Reinhold Messner’s futuristic museum is dedicated to the history of Alpinism. It was designed by the legendary architect Zaha Hadid, while PICHLER projects supplied the entire building envelope and all steel structures.
The altitude of the site and the challenging weather conditions made the construction of the steel structure – the true backbone of this project – particularly difficult. The result is the architectural embodiment of mountaineering. Inside, the photographs and objects Messner collected during his life in the mountains document the past and present of modern mountaineering.
Thanks to its special design, partially built inside the rockface, the internal temperature of the Messner Mountain Museum Corones remains constant throughout the year. Its façade systems further ensure high energy efficiency. The museum itself is a multifunctional room that blends seamlessly into the landscape. It has been certified as a KlimaHaus A+ low-energy building.
In Messner’s own words, the museum is ‘a place of quiet where people can slow down and enjoy unforgettable views. It is a place of withdrawal that opens up the human senses for the above and beyond, where the mountains become an experiential space and a part of our culture. In mental flights beyond all summits, they are revealed anew.’
